The first leg of the South Island journey begins with the Auckland to Taupo drive. I mostly focused on the drive itself here with few stops. This was so I could get a feel for what the next 10 days would be like – that and I’ve done this drive before so knew what to expect. I also didn’t leave until about midday, since I didn’t have a motel check out time to worry about.
